Love in the Time of Cholera

ThumbsDown. Based on the brilliant novel of the same name, Love is an examination of past flames. If you enjoyed The Bridges of Madison County, you’ll want to check this movie out. It’s no where close to Bridges as a film but it does have some moments. I read the book a few years ago and wanted to see it on the silver screen. I have to say that i was disappointed with this flick but it could be interesting for fans of the novel. The cliche of “the book was better” totally applies to this movie. The romantic comedy Serendipity references the book and is also a vital part of the narrative. Seredipity is a much better movie. Its light hearted and chemistry between John Cusack and Kate Beckensale is golden. The Painted Veil didn’t work in trying to adapt this novel and it doesn’t work here either. Will have to wait until another adaptation is made to see if this novel can work on film.
I am a fan of period drama but this doesn’t quite work. The cast is pretty good but characters are not very engaging. It was a difficult call but i will have to say that Love in the Time of Cholera is a thumbs down.
