religulous

October 12th, 2008 by thecup

This documentary film about religion is made by the director of Borat and stars Bill Mahr. Religion is something that interests me a great deal. I grew up in a very religious home and i know how much power it can have over people. After i got into college, i started thinking about other religions and the history of established religions. I figured out that i wasn’t something that i wanted to be a part of. I think that religion can be something that is dangerous. It has the ability to brain wash you and the church can be something something that controls your life. Some people find comfort in knowing about god, but some people end up causing a lot of harm because of religion.

I personally think that people should relax about this issue. We should not be so serious about it. And, religious freaks should try to control their temper. I have tried to get some intelligent conversations going with religious freaks, but it always ends up being an argument. Religious nuts gets so offended so quickly. I haven’t checked out this movie yet, but i will heading over to the theater right now. I heard great things about it and i am sure it will be worth 10 bucks. I hope this film does well, so that the studios are encouraged to produce more movies for adults.

Juno

Juno was a pleasant surprise. Ellen Page who I thought was annoying in the previews was actually cute and very quirky. The characters are what drive the film. Great acting from Jennifer Garner (never thought I would say that) and Jason Bateman. Her parents are a little cartoonish but it works, especially Allison Janney. If you are looking for a laugh out loud comedy this movie is not for you. The film is surprisingly deep and does a great job of dealing with abortion without sounding preachy. If you go to a yahoo poll of who should win BEST PICTURE of the year at the Oscars, Juno go the majority of the votes. I guess America is for a feel good film rather then films that don’t lift your spirits up.

A Korean businessman wakes up in a room with no windows. The door is locked. He can’t get out. Every night he is gassed. He starts to lose his mind. On T.V. he learns that his wife is murdered and he is the one the police are looking for. His daughter has been sent to foster care. How long does he stay in the room??? 15 years!!! Why would anyone do this? One day he wakes up and he is on the roof top of a building. He has been set free? Why? He goes on a quest to find out who did this to him and why. The answer? One of the most shocking ending you will ever see. You thought the Sixth Sense was crazy this is insane!!! Rent it soon and tell me what you think.

27 Dresses TWO THUMBS UP!!!
james-marsden.jpg
Just as I predicted, I picked 27 Dresses over Cloverfield and it was sooo worth it. Katherine Heigl is of course great, but a good romantic comedy needs to have chemistry. That on screen chemistry is made with James Marsden who comes out of the shadow of being cast as “not the right guy role.” The chemistry is great and Marsden should be seeing bigger roles in the future. If his picture looks familiar, you might have seen him as cyclops in X-Men, The Notebook, and Enchanted. In all the films he gets his heart broken and he is not portrayed as a “bad guy” but rather just not the right guy. Good to see he finally gets the girl for a change…..oops did I spoil the ending? Come on…..

American Gangster

December 23rd, 2007 by thecup

vir.jpgDenzel Washington and Russel Crowe reunite for American Gangster. We first saw them together when Russel Crowe was an unknown. He was the bad guy in the futuristic Virtuosity. I thought Virtuosity was pretty intense but i understand why it didn’t do so well at the box office. Denzel is at his best in American Gangster. He plays a cool black gangster who’s bite is harder then is bark. My only problem with the movie was the ending. It busted out with a Lord of the Rings type ending. The movie wouldn’t end. The audience should leave the theater wanting more instead of wondering when the movie will end.

a.jpgIt’s not one of the best gangster movies of all time, but this film makes you curious about Frank Lucas, the real life gangster the film is based on. It also brings a fresh prespective to the genre. We are so used to Italian mop bosses and it gets pretty boring. I want to see more ethnic gangster flicks. Movies that are realistic instead of cheesy and sterotypical. Why do Asian gangster flicks always have martial artists? Triads and Yakuza kill people with guns not with fists of fury or with samarai swords.

In this movie, Denzel plays a bad guy with who’s actually pretty good. He doesn’t match the intensity we see in Training Day but it’s still a great performance. I didn’t really like Crowe in this picture. I understand that you need a antagonist in these type of films, but i think it would have been better to make it a lessor role and give it to a no name actor instead of Crowe.

I’m critical of this movie cause i expected a little bit more, but i still consider this film to be a must watch. Thumbs up.

I am Legend

December 20th, 2007 by thecup

legend.jpgI’m not a fan of zombie movies. Never was and never will be but i enjoyed this flick. Maybe cause Big Willie styles was all up in it, or maybe cause this zombie movie had a story. This movie isn’t great but i’m going to give it a thumbs up.

I’ve always liked the story line of being the last man on earth. The fear and loneliness. At least Will Smith had a dog as a companion. Tom Hanks had a volleyball. Something very creepy about New York City all quiet. You saw this in Vanilla Sky a few years ago too.

The movie start off really cool. Sets the tone of the movie in the first 10 mins, which is always a good thing. They cut in the back story really well. We start caring for Will’s character and feel sorry for him.

If you’ve seen the trailers, you’ve pretty much know the whole movie. He’s all alone and there are zombies. But Will’s acting makes you want to continue watching. I had two problems with the film. One, zombies. Two, the ending.

Spoiler Alert.

Will dies, obviously u know that cause of the title. Can’t have a Legend without some heroic death. I don’t have a problem with death. I like when the main character dies, but it just didn’t work in this movie. I left the theater thinking, why didn’t he try to get in the bomb shelter and wait till morning. He could have saved everybody and lived. Maybe he’s clautrophobic? The heroic ending seemed like a heroic ending. Very forced.

Still, Thumbs up.

Rescue Dawn (2006)

December 9th, 2007 by alan_smithee

Rescue Dawn was one of my most anticipated movies of 2007. The movie tells about an escape attempt of POWs from a Vietcong (Laosian Vietcong?) camp. Sadly, the plot didn’t deliver very well, even compared to Rambo series. The story was waaay too feel-goodish, some parts were even too comedic for supposedly a desperate escape attempt.

473094.jpg But Christian Bale, as always, gave his full potential for his role. Its amazing to witness such a fine actor would go to the edge and push out all his best. As for Jeremy Davies, I think he did a so-so performance, reprised his role for as Charles Manson in Helter Skelter. All in all, it was pretty entertaining flick, but that’s all, its just another Hollywood movie complete with its cheesinesses like in any Hollywood films. And Herzog has proved himself that he is not a Bruno Stroszek for making this movie in an “American” way.

Babel (2006)

November 29th, 2007 by alan_smithee

I was kinda skeptical at first, knowing that this one wont have much differences with Inarritu’s previous films in terms of plotting and technical aspects. But I decided to have a go anyway and I liked it, a lot.

babel-rinko-kikuchi.jpgBabel is more than another pulp-fictionish films like its predecessors (most notably, Amores Perros & 21 Grams). It simply tells how a tiny bit of Americanism can easily affect the rest of the world’s fate, thus makes this movie clearly a bash on so-called universalism, or globalism to be precise. Kudos to Inarritu for this good movie, and not to forget, for the mesmerizing Rinko Kikuchi, whatta great find!

Beowulf

November 25th, 2007 by thecup

angelinabeowulf.jpgEven an animated Angelina Jolie couldn’t make this film work. Ever since i saw Mrs. Jolie take her top off in that mozilla firefox movie, i wanted to see an animated version of her on the silver screen. Robert Z made some of my favorite movies. Back to the future…that was a great flick. But then he got all fancy and started dabbling in CGI films like Polar Express. Even Tom Hanks couldn’t make that movie good. Beowulf is for the Lord of the Rings dorks that play World of Warcraft and fantasize about Angelina Jolie. (Wait am i talking about myself)

Visual Graphics is important for blockbuster releases but can’t forget about plot. Have to have a good story or you end up with a shitty spiderman movie. They should have opted for a 300 look instead of going full on CGI. Anyway this film blows and its a thumbs down. But Angie is hot as a Cartoon.

Before Sunset Two Thumbs Up High

November 3rd, 2007 by thecup

beforesunset3.jpg
BeforeSunset is a perfect example about a great sequel. Very few sequels are good let alone better then the original. Maybe Godfather part 2 was the only one. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are great actors bring to life these characters again. It was so satisfying to watch this movie. I saw this before i saw Before Sunrise. After this film ended i had to run to BestBuy to buy Before Sunrise, it was that good. I didn’t run to blockbuster to rent, no this movie was a keeper. The director Richard Linklater has a great collection of films under his belt. Dazed and Confused and Waking life are cult favorites. He’s a god among young amateur filmmakers. To be self taught and be that good of a director is just amazing.

Amazing. If you haven’t see this film yet you best be on your way to bestbuy to pick it up.
