Dan In Real Life

August 24th, 2008 by thecup

I didn’t really have a strong desire to watch this movie on dvd, but there was nothing else at Blockbuster so i decided to take a peek. I have to say that i was very surprised. This movie has a lot of heart. It can get a bit corny, but love is corny. I must say that Julliette Binoche is lovely. She like a real and natural beauty. I’m a fan of Dane Cook’s older standup comedy, but he really shouldn’t be acting. He’s a terrible actor. Anyway, if you have to time, check out Dan in real life. It’s a touching family related love story. It shows you that love can happen even tho the circumstances are not so good.

Thumbs up!

smart people

August 19th, 2008 by thecup

I really liked this movie. It’s kind of slow paced, but didn’t mind it cause the cast was incredible. If you enjoyed Sideways, you’re sure to enjoy this flick. I think Ellen Page is going to be a real star in Hollywood. She’s a sexy dork/nerd type and one of the few teen actresses that can actually act. I never like Sarah Jessica Parker in movies, but must say that she was good in this one. Dennis Quaid is getting damn old. I remember him in the 80s with his wife Meg Ryan. He used to be a pimp back in the day.

The movie flows like “the squid and the whale.” It’s kind of like rushmore. The comedy is dry but the characters make the film feel genuine. The film has a lot of heart and i recommend it.

Thumbs up for smart people.

WristCutters a love story

July 29th, 2008 by thecup

Let me start off by saying, Shannyn Sossamon is beautiful! Gawd damn she’s hot! I got this movie because i was kind depressed and thinking about killing myself. (not really) but i was kinda depressed. I picked it up cause there were some good reviews on the DVD jacket. And obviously, i’m a fan of Miss Sossamon.

The movie is really good. It’s very creative and i recommend it. It’s a modern take on “defending your life.” It’s a cooler version of that afterlife movie. If this movie was just a black comedy, i don’t think i would like it very much. But, wristcutters is a love story. It’s about falling in love and losing love.

The cast is brilliant. Everyone acts their part and acting it A class. The directer does a great job setting up the scene and letting the story move forward.

Thumbs up!

2 days in Paris

July 26th, 2008 by thecup

2 days in parisIf you loved “before sunrise & before sunset” you’re probably going to link this dialogue rich movie. 2 days in Paris was a surprising film written and directed by julie delpy. I didn’t realize how talented she was. The script is amazing. I love dialogue rich movies. Of course, the dialogue has to be real and engaging. I rented this movie without any expectations. I just felt like watching a relationship flick or chick flick. But this movie is much more then a chick flick. It’s a smart film about relationships.

Most films follow a basic formula. This movie is structurally sound, but it’s quite original. I could totally relate to the stupid arguments that these two characters were having. The insecurities and self doubt of every day relationships is represented well in this movie. I was in a few inter racial/ inter language relationships. I understand how conversations can lost in translation. I know how it feels to be in the outgroup when meeting friends or family.

Thumbs up!

Why did i get married?

July 26th, 2008 by thecup

why did i get marriedWhy did i get married is the first drama film written and directed by Tyler Perry. Let me start off this post with a question. Why did i watch this movie? I guess because i recently got married and i thought i’d give this “black” movie a chance. To be honest, i’m not a fan of Tyler Perry. I don’t understand why his movies make so much money. I guess white people love watching black men in drag.

I actually like relationship movies. I even like “black” movies. I enjoyed “boys in the hood” “the wood” and “the best man.” I even liked “for love and basketball” and “brown sugar.” But this movies was bad. I blame the writing and i blame the directing. Most of all, i blame the bad acting. The only actor i enjoyed in this movie was the guy who was in “cool running.”

The movie is overacted by it’s “icon” star, janet jackson. None of the chracters are likeable and i didn’t care any of them. The movie is corny. If they changed the script and changed up the actors, it might not be that bad. I don’t think Tyler Perry should act anymore. Unless he dresses in drag for the white fans, he really has no business acting.

Four married couples meet once a year to talk about relationships. Janet’s character is a writer and she wrote an award winning book based on the relationship of her friends. This movie is like a bad episode of Oprah. No, it’s a bad episode of Dr. Phil.

They should rename this movie to “why would you want to watch this movie?” Thumbs down, way down!

Vantage point

July 10th, 2008 by thecup

vantage pointWhat a god awful movie this was. I just finished watching this sorry excuse for a movie. I can’t believe so many actors wanted to be in this movie. Granted, non of them are A listers, but still. I’m thinking Forrest Whittaker took this role before he won his Oscar. This movie was hideous. The story didn’t flow and i was left watching 10 mins of the movie over and over again. I wasn’t even curious about who the shooter was. What was the point of this flick? Save the president? Honestly, i wouldn’t mind if the president got shot. It’s not like back in the day of JFK. I don’t think the country would mourn that much if Bush got shot.

Not worth watching. Thumbs down! Way Down!

Californication

July 9th, 2008 by thecup

californicationThis Showtime Original TV series is pretty amazing. I rented the first season of The Tudors because i got interested in Henry the 8th. My interest sparked because i saw “The other Boyln girl.” I couldn’t resiste Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson. Anyway, on the bonus disk of “the Tudors” there was the first episode of Californication starring David Ducovny. I thought the writing was solid and the actors amazing. I like the daughter in the movie. She’s not annoying like most child actors. His wife and his wife’s boyfriend’s daughter are hot.

If you like witty dialogue and good acting, you should check this series out. Watch it on showtime or rent the whole first season on dvd.

Into the Wild

June 30th, 2008 by thecup

Into the Wild is a movie directed by Oscar winning actor Sean Penn. The movie is about the life of Christopher intothewildMcCandless. It chronicles his voyage into the wild of Alaska. The film features an all star cast. The movie talks about issues of human greed and decadence. It is a critique of modern society. The film is very deep and inspirational and touching. Emile Hirsh, who plays McCandless does a great job in this movie. I’ve seen him grow up from “The girl next door” to “Lords of Dogtown.” He was always a teeny bopper but he shows off his acting chops with this flick.

This movie is not for popcorn. You can’t just grab a bag of chips and digest this one. You have to be in a certain mood to understand it. Being an unsatisfied guy in his late 20s or early 30s, i was able to take some things to heart. I want material success, but at the same time, i know that won’t satisfy me either. I want to go to Walden Pond and be a Walden Baby. I want to grow as a human being and be more spiritually in tuned with my natural surrounding.

Anyway, this movie is a thumbs up for me. Watch it when you are in a thinking mood.

Happiness

May 16th, 2008 by thecup

happiness.jpgHappiness stars an indie style all star cast. The film features Phillip Seymore Hoffman as a shy pervert. The lives of all of the characters are inter mingled. The characters all seem to escape happiness. It’s an examination of how shitty life really is. The outwardly perfect couple in the movie is the worst off. The film is pretty long but each story line moves smoothly along so the viewer doesn’t really notice. It’s a black comedy that should be viewed by mature audiences. The theme of abnormal sex is a motif through out this film. The movie seem Freudian. Sexual tension and sexual frustration is what makes these people so dysfunctional. It was pretty cool watching Phillip Seymore Hoffman play a character he knows how to play best. He plays the loser perfectly. His character is both sad and creepy. Everything about him is creepy and disgusting. Bravo Hoffman. Thumbs up!

Blair Witch Project

May 16th, 2008 by thecup

blairwitch.jpgSome of you may not know this movie. It was a little indie film that ended up making a lot of movie. It opened the way for the potential of amateur films to gross a lot of money. Blair Witch project was a success because of the marketing strategy. They confused reality and made it seem like it was a documentary. The films footage was made to look like the lost footage of three film makers out to find the Blair Witch. The movie caused a stir because of the rough camera work. People were throwing up in theaters. I think Cloverfield was able to make money because of Blair Witch. It uses similar tactics and similar film making styles. Both films were pieces of shit. But, i guess pieces of shits make money in Hollywood.
