Round 2 (Match #2) Johnny Depp vs Denzel Washington

February 14th, 2008 by thecup

johnnydepp1.jpgdenzelwashington1.jpg
Both these guys dominated in the first round. Johnny Depp destroyed Samuel L. Jackson 6-0 and Denzel surprisingly beat Harrison Ford quite handly 7-2. Both are relatively young and have many great films under their belt. Johnny Depp has been nominated for an oscar three times but never won. He played strange off-beat character very very well. Maybe he has Tim Burton to thank for that. From 21 Jump Street to Capt. Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp has come a long way in a relatively short time. Denzel Washington has won two academy awards and he is great at portraying real-life characters. These are two completely different actors, both bringing something different to the table. Again another hard one to call. To vote just leave a comment, since I get very few comments, yours WILL count. Here are some of their best scenes.

Johnny Depp

Round 2 (Match #1) Robert DeNiro vs Anthony Hopkins

February 13th, 2008 by thecup

robert-de-niro.jpganthonyhopkins.jpg
Two great actors battle it out in round 2. Robert DeNiro one of the greatest method actors of our time made his name by playing very troubled characters with director Martin Scorsese. He is a six time academy award nominee and two time winner. However you can make an argument that DeNiro has been type casted as a mobster, which he has never been able to get away from. Anthony Hopkins came out of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and has had great success in stage, television, and film. He made a big name for himself in the Silence of the Lambs and never looked back, playing a wide range of characters he has established himself as one of the greatest actors ever. This one will be a hard one to call. To vote just leave a comment! Here are some of their best scenes.

Round 1 (Match #16) Robert Duvall vs Tom Cruise

February 11th, 2008 by thecup

robertduvall.jpgtomcruise.jpg
Finally the first round comes to an end. We end with two very different type of actors. Duvall has played many supporting roles really. When he did star in a film, he got great acclaim from critics but poor box office results. On the other hand Tom Cruise has had many $100 million dollar films yet got very few positive feedback from critics. Maybe his celebrity hurts him in that people see “Tom Cruise” rather than the characters he is trying to play. This match up could be seen as teacher vs student (Days of Thunder). To vote just leave a comment. This is your last chance to vote on the other 16 match ups and in two days you will know who is moving on to round #2. Here are some of their best performances.

Robert Duvall
Tom Hagan - The Godfather
Liutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore - Apocalypse Now
Euliss Dewey - The Apostle

Tom Cruise
Jerry Maguire - Jerry Maguire
Frank T.J. Mackey - Magnolia
Lt. Daniel Kaffee -A Few Good Men

Round 1 (Match #15) Morgan Freeman vs Daniel Day-Lewis

February 9th, 2008 by thecup

morganfreeman.jpgdanieldaylewis.jpg
Second to last match in the first round of the tournament. How can you not love Morgan Freeman? He always brings someone great to every film he is in. However he is going up against one of the hottest actors on screen today. Daniel Day Lewis is sure to win his first Oscar for Will There Be Blood this year. If you go on a collection of work you have to go with Freeman but as far as being the better actor, Daniel Day-Lewis should win hands down. To vote just write a comment and please vote for the other previous match ups. Here are some of their best performances.

Morgan Freeman

Ellis Redding - The Shawshank Redemption
Hoke Colburn - Driving Miss Daisy
Ned Logan - Unforgiven

Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Plainview - There Will Be Blood
Bill Cutting - Gangs of New York
John Proctor - The Crucible

Round 1 (Match #14) Matt Damon vs Ian McKellen

February 9th, 2008 by thecup

mattdamon.jpgianmckellen2.jpg
Two very different actors battle it out in the first round. Ian Mckellen is might be the best British actor to make it big in Hollywood. I feel McKellen might be a better actor than Damon overall, however Matt Damon has been in two of my top then favorite films. Also you have to take into account the Lord of the Rings factor, people love LOTR and I really don’t know why. Is it possible that people will vote against Gandalf?? To vote just leave a comment. Here are some of their best performances.

Matt Damon
Will Hunting - Good Will Hunting
Mike McDermott - Rounders
Jason Bourne - The Bourne Identity

Ian McKellen
Gandalf - The Lord of the Rings
Magneto - X-Men
James Whale - Gods and Monsters

Round 1 (Match #13) Paul Newman vs Brad Pitt

February 7th, 2008 by thecup

paulnewman.jpgbradpitt.jpg
The old vs the new. Both great actors but I feel Brad Pitt is very underrated as an actor because of his great looks. Paul Newman has always had respect, he has made quality films that spanned five decades. However his resume might not be enough to beat a actor like Brad Pitt who is beloved by all. Brad Pitt might be guilty of taking less challenging roles in favor of the big box office blockbusters. To vote just write a comment on who you feel is the better actor. The first round is coming to an end and there are still a lot of ties in the previous match ups. Here are some of their best performances.

Paul Newman

Lucas Jackson - Cool Hand Luke
Eddie Felson - The Hustler
Frank Galvin - The Verdict

Brad Pitt

Jeffery Goines - 12 Monkeys
Tyler Durden - Fight Club
David Mills - Seven

Round 1 (Match #12) Sean Penn vs Dustin Hoffman

February 6th, 2008 by thecup

seanpenn.jpgdustinhoffman.jpg
Once again another great match up!! The early bad boy of hollywood vs the Rain Man. Sean Penn is great don’t get me wrong but Dustin Hoffman has played characters that we will remember for a very long time. The new generation might not see Dustin Hoffman as a great actor but his work during the 80’s and 90’s are fantastic. This match up I feel will go to Hoffman by Rain Man alone. That might be one of the best performances of all time. To vote just leave a comment saying who you feel should win. Feel free to vote for the other matchups. I get very few comments so your vote will matter! Here are some of their best performances.

Sean Penn
Jimmy Markum - Mystic River
Matthew Poncelot - Dead Man Walking
Sam Dawson - I Am Sam

Dustin Hoffman
Raymond Babbitt - Rain Man
Benjamin Braddock - The Graduate
Dorothy Michaels - Tootsie
